Ceramics Artist in Residence- Athletic Field Park

The Chicago Park District seeks a ceramics artist excited about using their medium to connect with community in a public studio space. 
This year-long residency will offer studio space, some materials and equipment in exchange for studio support and maintenance vital to the Athletic Field Park’s ceramics programs.  The selected Artist will also contribute to the park community and showcase their skill and expertise by developing a culminating exhibition or other auxiliary programming.
Program Details/Guidelines:
  • Program Dates Sept 1, 2018- August 31, 2019
  • Artist must be able to pass CPD required fingerprint background check
  • Artist must complete studio orientation before residency begins
  • Artist must be able to lift a minimum of 50 lbs and dedicate approx 10 hours weekly to general studio maintenance 
  • During residency, Artist must develop plan for culminating event, professional development workshops or auxiliary programming depending on skills and areas of interest
  • As part of the outcomes, artists must document their experience working in community space.  These resources may be shared by the Chicago Park District in future residency materials
Studio Responsibilities may include:  
  • Mixing glazes and recycling clay
  • Maintaining the Athletic Field Park ceramic studio and equipment.  These duties may include washing up/mopping up work areas, vacuuming kiln, organizing kiln posts, preparing materials for classes, rollings out clay or scrapping down tables and organizing tools.
  • Developing and facilitating Artist in Resident Show or other events or workshops to bring visibility to CPD ceramics programs citywide
  • Communicating with current and potential students about programming   
  • Quarterly program check-ins and as need for collaborative/culminating programs
  • Post-Residency Debrief

  • Studio Space at the Athletic Field Ceramic Studio during park building operating hours (Mon-Thurs 9am-8pm and Fri 9am-7pm) Note: Park ceramics classes and programs may also share the space during these times
  • In-Kind materials valued at up to $500 for the year including, but not limited to, firing, tools, equipment, clay, and glazes,  given by the Athletic Field Park for Artist in Resident Show or other auxiliary programming
  • Utilizing some of the Athletic Field Park ceramics studio equipment such as slab roller, pottery wheels, spray booth, extruder and slip casting room.  **While the Artist in Residence will have access to the kiln for firing, it may only be operated by Park District Ceramics Instructor
