Making the Most of Professional Organizations

The creative professions tend to attract individuals with independent natures. Yet writers have affiliated with International PEN since 1921, and composers with the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) since 1914. The College Art Association (CAA) came into existence in 1911 as a professional organization for both art historians and artists, in particular those who teach at the college level. Dance Films Association
A nonprofit service organization that serves as a go-between between users and makers of dance films. DFA is a member organization, connecting artists, distributors, curators, viewers, students, and public and university libraries.
Society of Dance History Scholars
Promotes dance studies through research, publication, performance, and outreach to audiences across the arts, humanities, and social sciences.
Dance Critics Association
Created in 1973 by a dance critics who recognized the need for an organization that represented working dance critics. The group's primary focus is an annual meeting to serve dance writers. Has nearly 300 members (both freelance and full-time) who write for U.S., European and Asian newspapers, magazines and Websites.
