Contrast Without Color with Toyoharu Kii

Wednesday, September 12, 2018 - 9:00am to Sunday, September 16, 2018 - 5:00pm

Can you express yourself in mosaic without relying on color?  Japanese mosaic Maestro Toyoharu Kii returns to The Chicago Mosaic School to teach his 5-day exclusive workshop that focuses on the many non-color aspects that make a mosaic. Kii instructs students on how one can express the feeling of something with one color. To make a monochromatic mosaic, students think about what is unique about mosaic. A limited palette can provide the artist ample opportunities to discover movement and expression texture and content.   Kii leads students first by creating designs using Chinese ink and Japanese paper. When the design is completed, students will learn Kii’s unique multi-step process that creates the eloquent and dynamic effects he uses in his own work. Kii’s kind, energetic teaching approach helps the student to improve their mosaic vocabulary in this unique way. Students have access to the CMS smalti and marble inventory to create their workshop piece. This is a rare opportunity to work with this contemporary master; so space is limited.

All materials are included. Prerequisites: Hammer & Hardie Workshop (or by permission).
