EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE GRAND MARAIS ART COLONY

 

JOB DESCRIPTION

The Grand Marais Art Colony is a non-profit art center that has nurtured art on the North Shore of Lake Superior since 1947, by providing services to artists, promoting art education, and supporting art in our community through an environment for creative excellence.

The Executive Director reports to the Board of Directors and is responsible for the leadership, management, and health of the organization, consistent with its mission and serves as the principal public face of the organization.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Implement the mission and the strategic goals and objectives of the organization with a mindset toward capacity building
  • Work with the Board and its Executive Committee to fulfill its governance function
  • Together, with the Program Director, give direction and leadership toward the achievement of the organization’s philosophy, mission, strategy, goals, and objectives
  • Work with bookkeeper to ensure the fiscal health of the organization, both in the near term and in light of longer term objectives
  • Monitor, manage, and when necessary, perform the day-to-day functions of the organization’s business
Requirements
Skills & Qualifications: 

PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree required; Masters degree preferred. Arts background/appreciation preferred but notrequired
  • Three or more years senior nonprofit management experience
  • Able to speak to measurable examples of having developed and executed strategies that have taken an organization to the next stage of growth
  • Experience with facilities expansion and capital campaign
  • Track record of effectively leading a regionally and/or nationally scaling organization and staff
  • Solid, hands-on, budget management skills, including budget preparation, analysis, decision-making, and reporting
  • Strong organizational and quality oversight abilities for planning, delegating, and implementing a broad-range of programming
  • Ability to develop and convey a consensus-driven vision of the Art Colony’s strategic future to staff, board, and donors
  • Knowledge of fundraising strategies and donor relations unique to nonprofit sector
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, including excellent grant writing and reporting experience
  • Ability to interface with and engage diverse donor groups
  • Demonstrated ability to oversee, collaborate with, and empower staff
  • Past success working with a Board of Directors with the ability to cultivate existing board member relationships
  • Strong public speaking ability
