OUT OF SIGHT | Call for Project Coordinator
ABOUT OUT OF SIGHT
Recently, Chicago welcomed Lawrence Weiner’s, OUT OF SIGHT, a participatory social sculpture floor installation (modelled after a hopscotch) that invites active participation and encourages audiences to consider their life direction. This project was inspired by concepts such as exuberance, energy, vision, visualization, enlightenment serendipity and worldview.
Installed in both English and Spanish, OUT OF SIGHT, encourages viewers of all ages to consider the installation messages and “play” with their multiple and open-ended meanings. Viewers might jump around the sculpture to connect ideas with their energy and bodies and reach for what is “out of sight.” OUT OF SIGHT is not only a work of art but also an enlivening experience for each person who encounters it and is meant to be a metaphorical framework for the journey of self-discovery and self-empowerment.
Adaptable to the ground—indoor or outdoor—OUT OF SIGHT is a two-dimensional site-specific work that offers participating museums, civic, and public venues an opportunity to temporarily (or permanently) install a work of art that forges a connection with all walks of life, including adults, teenagers and children. In the upcoming months, Chicago’s Park District parks will welcome additional OUT OF SIGHT installations across the city.
OUT OF SIGHT Mission
The inherent public appeal of OUT OF SIGHT is its ability to tap into an awareness of social forces and dynamics evident in the world today. Among these are the quest for self-discovery and self-actualization; the notion that the journey itself is as important as the destination; the role of optimism, positivity and humor in understanding ourselves and who we can be; and the sense of being part of a larger Community. OUT OF SIGHT challenges its audience to participate and step onto the sculpture to take part in a journey of creative self-reflection and self-realization. Suitable and accessible for all ages, OUT OF SIGHT is particularly relevant for youth at a pivotal point in their lives; the teenage years. By Being able to stand, walk, or jump from one position to the next, OUT OF SIGHT taps into the dynamic ‘gamification’ of learning and self-discovery. The unrestricted, unique nature of the sculpture allows for important dialogue with students around goal-setting, inspiration, envisioning and shaping the future, and their applications to life through visual, verbal, social, and kinesthetic learning. OUT OF SIGHT is a work of conceptual art designed to empower and inspire .
