The MacDowell Colony is the oldest artists’ colony in the United States. Since 1907, the Colony has provided artists of all disciplines with the time and private space for creative work. Situated on 450 acres of woodland in Peterborough, New Hampshire, the Colony welcomes some 250 composers, writers, visual artists, interdisciplinary artists, architects, and filmmakers from the United States and abroad each year. The sole criterion for acceptance is talent. In 1997, MacDowell was awarded the National Medal of Arts "for nurturing and inspiring many of this century’s finest artists." Among those artists are Milton Avery, James Baldwin, Leonard Bernstein, Willa Cather, Aaron Copland, E.L. Doctorow, Oscar Hijuelos, Meredith Monk, and Thornton Wilder.
