The hazardous conditions and materials found in many industrial workplaces can also be found in many art workspaces. When hazards are identified in an industrial workplace, safety training and information may be required, but these resources are less often available to artists who work alone or in small groups. Artists at Work Forums at the Chicago Cultural Center
Artists at Work Forums present local leaders – artists and other experts – in discussion about issues of concern for artists in Chicago – from marketing and p.r. to legal issues, to strategies for “careers that work”. The forums have been held at the Chicago Cultural Center since 2002, and sponsored by the Richard H. Driehaus Foundation. All forums are open to the public, and admission is free. Theaters and Artists in Education stop by the Creative Reuse Warehouse!
In the last ten years I have had to find something that would look like the receiving room of a jail; about 500 Styrofoam balls; netting to cover a 50 foot proscenium stage’s underwater fantasy; 100 large sheets of fine drawing paper; buckets of colored shapes, nuts, bolts and marbles for a kindergarten class play and a full 1960’s kitchen.
