Women Out Loud

Insight Arts is proud to revive Women Out Loud, Chicago’s longest running women’s open mic, on Thursday, August 28, from 7 PM to 9 PM at the Center for New Possibilities. Founded by poets/writers/performance artists Krystal Ashe, Tara Betts, Anida Yoeu Ali, and Lucy Anderton, Women Out Loud grew out of a need to create a venue for women spoken word artists to spit fiery words in a nurturing space. From its small beginnings at Madbar, Women Out Loud has done its rounds of bars and coffee shops around Wicker Park, including the Guild Complex. It also grew to include women writing in a variety of genres – prose, music, and performance art. This time the celebrated women’s open mic has come to Rogers Park via Insight Arts and hopes to draw the same kind of power and energy from women writers all over Chi-town.
Through the years, from 1999 to the early 2000s, Women Out Loud has been hosted by its instigators and an illustrious list of artists who have gone on to pursue careers in writing and spoken word including Kelly Tsai (three-time Def Jam Poetry featured artist), Nikki Patin, and Kay Barrett. Xan Sutton, a remarkable young performance poet, hosts this time around. The evening’s featured artists are award-winning Filipino poet and essayist Susan Layug, who has been featured on Chicago Public Radio, Marlaina Easton, a college professor whose work ranges from poetry to creative non-fiction, and up and coming spoken word artist Ashley Hart. An added element is live art featuring visual artists Misha Ferguson and Keyla Mendez. Visual art by Genevieve McCloskey and Alexis Schacke will also be displayed. An open mic follows for women and women-identified poets, writers, and spoken word artists to showcase their talent. Men may applaud and cheer.
$5 donation, $3 for open mic performers.
