I began screen printing in 2006 as a way to relieve stress and to put my personal feelings into a form I could easily understand. Creating something beautiful and sharing it with those around me was a way for me to communicate my feelings. How can an art practice have a political/social impact?
"Art as a vehicle for social control" is as old as Art itself, while I realize many people will take exception with that statement, I will stand by it. From a historical perspective, images were often used to glorify a God or successful citizens (who served as an example of behavior that one should emulate) or to celebrate a hero (who sacrificed in service to the state). The relatively high cost and specialized skills needed for the production of imagery precluded the creation of artworks that challenged the existing powers. more...
